Privacy Policy
Pennywick: Budget & Receipts · Last updated July 16, 2026
Pennywick is designed to keep your financial information on your device. This policy explains exactly what data the app touches, and what — if anything — ever leaves your device.
Data stored on your device
Your transactions, budgets, savings goals, categories, and receipt images are stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device data storage (SwiftData). This data is not uploaded to Pennywick's developer or to any analytics service. Pennywick does not currently sync this data to iCloud or any other cloud service.
Camera and photo access
Pennywick uses your device's camera or photo library only to capture or import images of receipts and bills so you can log expenses. These images are processed entirely on your device to extract text (optical character recognition). Receipt images themselves are never uploaded anywhere.
Optional cloud-assisted categorization
When on-device Apple Intelligence is unavailable, Pennywick can optionally use Google's Gemini API to help categorize a receipt. This only happens if:
- on-device processing isn't available on your hardware/OS version, and
- you have explicitly granted consent for cloud-assisted processing in the app.
In that case, only the extracted text of the receipt (never the photo itself) is sent to Google's servers over an encrypted, ephemeral connection that stores no cookies or cache. This text is not linked to your identity, name, or any account — Pennywick has no user accounts. You can decline cloud-assisted processing at any time in Settings; the app will simply skip categorization suggestions for receipts that require it.
What Pennywick does not do
- No user accounts or sign-in
- No advertising or ad tracking
- No third-party analytics SDKs
- No sale or sharing of your data with third parties
Your data, your control
Because your data is stored locally, deleting the app deletes your data. There is no account to close and no server-side copy to request deletion of, except any receipt text that may have already been transmitted to Google's Gemini API for a single categorization request. See Google's Gemini API terms for details on how Google handles API requests.
Children's privacy
Pennywick is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from children.
